WINTER RACES AT TRENTHAM

(From Our Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, Friday. Trentham racecourse was an unexpectedly pleasant place on Tuesday, the first day of the winter races in Wellington, for a low barometer and cloudy skies made most people expect a bad day. As a consequence the frocking was rather exceptionally plain, and fur coats, or smartly-cut frieze or tweed ones were mostly to be seen, and the only relief to the eye was an occasional brightly-tinted hat in blue, gold, scarlet or green. Shortness prevailed in skirts, though, in the man, with reference to good taste apart from exaggeration. Bois de rose was not Only the leading shade, it was almost the only one, so far as the coloured frocks were concerned. It also appeared in the hats which crowned those wearing tweed or frieze. Brown was another approved shade, and* there were a few very smart black, or black and white costumes. Their Excellencies did not attend this meeting, but there was a party from Government House, consisting of Lady Fergusson, wearing navy blue, and her two daughters, one in fawn and a red hat, and the other in navy blue and a pale shade of bois de rose in her hat; Mrs. Day was in scarlet with a black coat and hat, and Miss Boyle, Christchurch, was in maroon ensemble and hat. Captain Curtis. Captain Boyle and Mr. Day were also present. Mr. Harcourt did the honours as usual, but Miss Harcourt was not well enough to be present. Among the visitors were:—Mrs. J. G. Coates, Lady Carncross, Lady Hunter, Mesdames Russell, Palmerston North: A. Duncan, Reed, Wilford, Beale, O’Connor, S. Wheeler, Harold Johnston, J. Duncan, Henry, Neil Maclean. B. E. Murphy, Morris, G. Reid, W. Watson, Fenwick, Tringham, O. Kember. C. Richardson, Ensor, Taihape; Dailey, Christchurch; Longuet. Handyside, T. Hislop, Misses Skerrett. Kebbell, Brandon, Maclean, Dunedin; Hall-Jones, Nelson, Enid Smith, Brunton. and others.
