INVINCIBLE COLORADO?

WINS ECLIPSE STAKES CORONACH IN THIRD PLACE WHAT OWNERS CONTRIBUTE TO STAKE By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright LONDON, To-day. The following is the result of the principal race run at Sandown Park: ECLIPSE STAKES (A sweepstake, tvith 1,500 sovs. added; weight-foi -age, with penalties and allowances; li miles.) COLORADO (Lord Derby), br h, bv Plialaris—Canyon, 4yis l MARIO (Lady James Douglas) b f, by Buchan—La Tosoa, 3yrs 2 CORONACH (Lord Woolavington), ch h, by Hurry On—Wet Kiss, 4yrs. 3 The only starters. Won by six lengths. —A. and N.Z.

Peculiar Conditions of Race The Eclipse Stakes is one of the most important weight-for-age races of the year in England. The conditions of the race make peculiar reading at this distance, by reason of the fact that although the added money is 1,50050v5., the second and third horses, and the breeders of all three placed horses, between them, take 1,85050 v more than the added money. But the conditions of the race explain this apparently anomalous position. Here they are. (Note. —Entries closed two years before the race.) “A sweepstake of ssovs. each; if left in after second Tuesday in October, 1925, 21sovs. extra: after last Tuesday in March, 192 C, 34sovs. extra; after first Tuesday in January, 1927, an additional 55sovs. If entered as yearlings, lOsovs. each; 21sovs. more if left in after last Tuesday in March, 1925; 32sovs. more if left in after last Tuesday in March, 1926; and 52sovs. if left in after first Tuesday in January, 1927. With l,soosovs. added; second horse OOOsovs., third horse 150sovs.; breeder of winner 500sovs., breeder of second 200sovs., breeder of third lOOsovs.; Three-year-olds 8.2; four-year-olds 9.0; mares and geldings allowed 31b.; winner of a weight-for-age of 800sovs, 41b; of one race of 1,50050v5.. 71b.; of any such race of 4,00050v5., 101 b. extra. Eclipse Stakes course, XJ miles.

Last year there were 276 entries, and of these 63sovs. forfeit was declared for 23 horses, 60sovs. for 44, 31sovs. for 48, 26sovs. for 19, lOsovs. for 46, and ssovs. for 48. Therefore in forfeits alone there would be no less than 6,971 sovs., and added to this the sweepstake of ssovs. each. The value of the race six months prior to its being run last July was somewhere in the vicinity of 8,35050v5., of which amount the winner’s share at that stage would be approximately 6,50050 vs a bad stake, and all but l.SOOsovs. contributed by owners!
