FLOOD PREVENTION

POSITION AT RANGITAIKI Rangitaiki settlers have received a reply to a recent request regarding the stop-banking of the Rangitaiki River, from the Minister of Public Works, the Hon. K. S. Williams. He states that the construction of the banks would cost, approximately, £46,000, and that he could not ask Cabinet for such a large sum. A subsidy on money raised by the settlers was the only thing likely to be granted. It was also doubtful if the damage caused by flooding warranted the expenditure and that the benefits obtained would compensate for the expenditure. He further states that if the settlers desire flood-protection the best way is to form a local river board district, prepare a scheme, and submit it to a poll of ratepayers. If this were done the Government would probably sympathetically consider the question of a subsidy on any loan money raised.
