TRAGEDY OF THE AIR
(Continued from Page 1.)
OFF TO HONOLULU AMERICANS SET OUT By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright Reed. 9.5 a.m. OAKLAND, Thursday. The monoplane, City of Oakland with Pilot Ernest Smith and Navigator Emery Bronte took off for Hawaii at 10.39 this morning. The objects of the flight are threefold: First, to be the first civilians to make the flight to Hawaii; second, to make the first round-trip flight; third, to lower the time of 25 hours 49 minutes made by the army aviators Maitland and Hegenberger. The plane circled the field after the take-off, and then disappeared, escorted by five other planes. _ The City of Oakland carries homing pigeons, which will be released at intervals of 200 miles at sea. The plane made two attempts before it succeeded in getting away. It halted half-way down the runway in the first effort, having run into a rut; but it was quickly towed back undamaged.—A. and N.Z.
