AMERICAN HEAT-WAVE

fifty deaths reported EASTERN STATES SWEPT Reed. 9.5 a.m. NEW YORK, Thursday. The heat wave in the eastern States continues unabated. It has now caused over 50 deaths, o£ which 12 are due to drownings or lightning. The remainder are attributed directly to the heat. Acute suffering has been caused, and there have been numerous prostrations. Stores and offices have closed early, and production has been reduced in some industries. In some cities the comparatively low humidity has reduced the fatalitios, which otherwise would have been higher. In New York Wednesday was the hottest day for July for over half a century.—A. and N.Z.
