RIOT AT SHANGHAI
CROWD ATTACKS POLICE STONES AND BATONS By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright Reed. 10 a.m. SHANGHAI, Thursday. A minor riot occurred on the northern boundary of the international settlement. A group of Cantonese soldiers tried to force an entry, and when stopped by the police commenced abusing them. This attracted a crowd of hawkers, coolies, and loafers, who stoned the police, the majority of whom were wounded, but not seriously. Reinforcements of police and members of the Green Howards Battalion, who were billeted nearby, quelled the riot, returning the stone-throwing with a baton charge, and dispersing the mob.—A. and N.Z.
