SERVICE RECOGNISED
A pleasing interlude then followed. In recognition of the services of Mr. and Mrs. Nathan A. Nathan, pioneers of Judaism in New Zealand, Dr. Goldstein presented them with a parchment copy of a page from the Golden Book, a volume kept at the Zionist headquarters in Jerusalem, wherein many great names of Jewry are enshrined. The treasurer to the campaign, Mr. I. Meltzer, reported that a sum of £2,721 had been promised to date, as the result of Dr. Goldstein’s appeal. Members of the Jewish congregation presented Dr. Goldstein with a New Zealand travelling rug as a mark of esteem. The Judean Girl Guides also asked him to accept a small token of remembrance. Mrs. David Nathan wished the doctor prosperity on behalf of the women of the community. She hoped it would be only “au revoir” and not “good-bye.” “Thisf is one of the noblest and most beautiful campaigns I have been called upon to assist,” said the envoy. He thanked his hearers for their generosity in contributing to the cause of Zionism. It was a sad moment when he had to part from those with whom he had worked so cordially, but he left them knowing that the endless vitality of their nation would keep alive the love of the fatherland, and urge forward the ideal of Zionism.
