Thousand Perish In China Flood
ENORMOUS DAMAGE DONE
Received 9.30 a.m. SHANGHAI, Wednesday. MORE than a thousand natives in Southern Anhwei were drowned and many thousands made destitute and homeless through a sudden rise in a Yangtsue tributary, which mounted ten feet in a few hours.
The flood inundated all villages on both banks, and several miles of dykes were broken. A tremendous loss of property occurred. Thousands of cattle perished, crops were ruined, and all buidlings on farms were swept away. Appeals for aid have been broadcasted, intimating that unless immediate measures are adopted, thousands more will perish from exposure and starvation.
Sampans and junks as a means of rescue are pitifully small, and many craft became overcrowded and capsized, the occupants being drowned. —A. «nd N.Z.
