CAMBRIDGE HALL

LEASE CREATES TROUBLE A special meeting of the Cambridge Borough Council was held on Tuesday night to consider tenders for the leasing of the Town Hall. Only one tender was received, from the Hippodrome Pictures, Ltd., Auckland. The company was prepared to take the hall for a period of five years at £lO a week for four nights weekly, with the night of renewal for two further Periods of five years each, at a rental of £l2 lO.s a week. The firm also agreed to spend between £2,000 and £3,000 on improvements to the interior of the hall.

In consequence of a point raised previously, legal advice had been secured by the council as to whether it was legal to lease the hall for a term of years. This was to the effect that Public tenders must be called, and that a "licence” could be given by the counCll for the use of the hall under certain conditions.

. V, r ‘ Glanville protested that if the ball was leased for five years, as suggested, with the right of lease for two further similar periods, it would interfere with the rights of the people, us ho one could tell what would be required in fifteen years. He also complained that the town clerk had refused to allow hfln to take a copy of tne legal advice received by the council, and declared he had perfect right
