NEWMARKET BOROUGH

BUILDING PROGRESS The ordinary fortnightly meeting of the Newmarket Borough Council was held last evening, the Mayor, Mr. S. Donaldson, presiding. The building inspector reported that a permit had been issued to Mr. T. Clements for the erection of a threestorey building at a value of £11,200. The Mayor pointed out that, in spite of the present depression, building in the borough was progressing apace and had already this year passed last year’s total.

The sanitary inspector reported that steps had been taken to minimise the danger where lloods had occurred during the recent heavy rains. Work is progressing as the weather permits at Outhwaite Park, according to the foreman of works. Plants have been placed in the rockeries and several lawns laid down.

The council is going to plant trees in Park Avenue, Parkfield Terrace, Huntly Avenue, Glasgow Terrace, Boyle Crescent and Sarawai Street. The Ministers’ Association wrote asking if the council could do anything to relieve unemployment by offering casual jobs. It was decided to reply that the council could not do anything in the meantime until the Secretary to the Treasury sanctioned the proposed relief of unemployment loan. * A complaint was laid by Hardleys, Ltd., against the Checker taxicabs for parking in front of their premises. The traffic inspector was given power to act.
