VIVE LA FRANCE!

HER NATIONAL DAY CONSUL RECEIVES VISITORS To-day is the National Day of the Republic of France. On July 14, 1789, the famous prison, the Bastille, was stormed and fell. It was the beginning of the revolution, from which grew the France of to-day. For about 10 years July 14 was celebrated as the National Day of France, but after that it was forgotten. Early in the 19th century it was revived, and has remained a day of celebration ever since. This morning M. Serre received visitors. In the afternoon the offices of the Consulate were closed in honour of the National holiday. At the French Club this evening there will be an entertainment and M. Serre will address those present on the history of French champagne wine. A lecture on Alexandre Dumas will be given by Mr. F. W. Reed, of Whangarei. There will also be a programme of songs and musical items.
