A MINER’S INJURY
COMPENSATION AWARDED ARBITRATION CASE The aid of the Arbitration Court was invoked this morning to arrive at a lump sum to compensate W. J. H. Stansbury, a miner, for partial disablement due to a heavy piece of timber falling on his right shoulder when ho was working in the Waihi Gold Mining Company’s mine. His Honour Mr. Justice Frazer presided. Mr. P. J. O’Regan appeared for Stansbury and Mr. H. P. Richmond for the company. The case turned on medical evidence as to the extent of the injury from which Stansbury was suffering. The evidence of several doctors called was in conflict. “We cire not too happy about it,” said his Honour, delivering the court’s judgment. “But this is one of those cases where the court has to make an attempt to assess a sum on the evidence however conflicting.” His Honour admitted the difficulties of the case and awarded full compensation up to date with a further four months for plaintiff’s neurasthenic condition. For the remainder of the period of liability the court granted 10 per cent.
