MELEE IN S.S. WAIPORI CONSTABLE’S INJURED LEG George Leadon, chief cook of the e.s. Waipori, was discharged by the captain at New Plymouth last Friday. He was still aboard on Saturday night, however, and as a result of his refusal to leave when ordered off by the skipper he was lined £2, in default 14 days, at the Police Court to-day. In the melee that followed the ordering-off, Constable L. G. Parkinson’s leg was injured, necessitating his removal to the hospital. Patrick Byrne, one of the ship’s firemen, was also arrested on charges of assaulting Constable Parkinson, and causing him actual bodily harm. The two men were brought before Messrs. E. C. Hatton and J. JR. Hill, J.P.’s, in the Police Court this morning. Leadon pleaded guilty. at first pleaded guilty to the two charges preferred against him, but later changed his pleas to not guilty, and said that he wanted a solicitor to appear for him.
