CHIMNEY SHATTERED
STRUCK BY LIGHTNING NELSON HOUSE SUFFERS Press Association. NELSON, Monday. The family of Mr. J. G. Dykes, manager of the Bank of New Zealand, was startled by a particularly loud report about 11 a.m. yesterday, when lightning struck the chimney of their house in Shelbounre Street. Then a sheet of flame, accompanied by several bricks, shot out of the dining-room fireplace and the room became full of dust from the explosion. An inspection showed that two sides of the chimney above the roof had been blown away, bricks and mortar being scattered over a good deal of the lawn. The chimney was cracked at the base and will probably have to be rebuilt.. The electric lighting system throughout the house was also put out of commission, the main fuse being completely melted. The telephone service in the locality was also disorganised. The thunderclap was perhaps the most severe experienced in Nelson for very many years. It followed immediately on the flash of lightning and many people who were watching the hailstorm through windows or from balconies were considerably startled.
