FISHERMEN WRECKED ON WAIHEKE ROCKS
A NARROW ESCAPE ONLY BOAT’JTeNGINE SAVED The auxiliary mullet-boat Nelson was battered to pieces on the rocks at Waihihi Bay, Waiheke, in the storm which raged last Saturday afternoon. The occupants, Mr. Albert Bray, of Birkenhead, owner of the boat, and another man had a narrow escape. The two men had been fishing off the island during the atternoon and had obtained a good catch. As dusk approached they set out for Matiatia, but heavy seas and a strong wind made it impossible, so they attempted to shelter in Waihihi Bay, but the boat was thrown on the rocks.
The plight of the men was noticed by a resident of the bay, Mr. T. Kirkpatrick, who assisted them ashore. Salvaging operations were carried out by Mr. Bray, assisted by a party of men, but although they worked hard until 2 o’clock on Sunday morning, the fury of the storm prevented their saving anything but the auxiliary engine.
During the week-end Mr. Kirkpatrick provided food and shelter for the fishermen. The boat was not insured.
