HOSPITAL AUXILIARY

A NEW ORGANISATION CARING FOR EX-PATIENTS LINKING UP SOCIAL WORK 'J'O brighter the lives of the patients, and particularly those just discharged from hospital, is one of the aims of the Auckland Hospital Auxiliary, an organsiation formed yesterday. Mr. O. Nicholson, who presided over an attendance of about 50, explained that the idea was to link up all social service activities in connection with the hospital. While not usurping any of the activities of the societies engaged in the work, it is hoped that greater results will be obtained by centralised direction. Social workers had necessarily t<» confine their efforts to certain restricted limits, said Mr. Nicholson, but the auxiliary hoped to follow up that work. CO-ORDINATED SERVICE

The excellent work done by the waterside workers was also referred to by the chairman. Many other organisations were also doing fine work, said Mr. Nicholson. Mr. W. Richmond, who administers the Auckland Hospital Patients’ and Families’ Fund, and Mr. R. Blackson. who is prominently associated with the hospital activities of the waterside workers, outlined the nature of the work undertaken by their respective organisations. “During the 16 years I Have been associated with the hospital it has been the dream of my life to see an organisation formed such as this,” said Dr. C. E. Maguire, the medical superintendent. He considered that one centra! authority would direct the services of all existing organisations to the best advantage. WELCOMED BY THE BOARD Mr. W. Wallace, chairman of Hospital Board, stated that the board would welcome the proposal. In addition to other activities mentioned, he considered the auxiliary could assist in providing special equipment, which the board was unable to assume responsibility for. Following the decision to form the auxiliary, the following officers were elected: Hon. president, the Mayoress, Mrs. A. L>. Campbell; president. Mrs. K. A. Kidd; secretary, Mrs. E. Maguire, treasurer, Mrs. H. Kirker; executive committee, Mrs. W. H. Parkes, Mrs. L). Nathan, Dr. E. B. Turkington, Miss I. Murray, and Major Gordon.
