SEAPLANE REACHES RECORD ALTITUDE

HEIGHT OF 37,500 FEET By Cable.—Press Association. —Copyright WASHINGTON, Monday. It is announced that Naval-Lieut. Champion created a new unofficial world’s altitude record in a seaplane. He attained a height of 37,500 feet. The machine used was a WrightApache seaplane of the service type of naval fighter. —A. and N.Z. M. Jean Callizo, of France, in September, 1926, flew in an airplane to a height of 48,500 feet. He admitted, however, that even with oxygen flowing into his lungs from a tank breathing became difficult after reaching 30,000 feet. The rush of blood to the head at these altitudes made him very uncomfortable and generally left him stone deaf for several hours. But as long as the barograph registered progress upward these annoyances were forgotten. Only when the instrument was stationary did the pain become intense, the record-holder said.
