BASHAM GUILTY
FINE OF £lO IMPOSED LABOUR MONTHLY SEDITIOUS NOTICE OF APPEAL GIVEN “rpHE magazine contains much extravagant language and matter likely, and no doubt intended to raise discontent and promote feelings of illwill and hostility among different classes in the community.” With these words Mr. W. R. McKean, S.M., in a reserved judgment, convicted Albert Edward Basham on a charge of selling “The Labour Monthly,” Vol IX., No. 3, a document expressing seditious intent. At the hearing of the case on June 24, Basham admitted being a Communist, but denied that he had been in communication with the Soviet in London. The magistrate held that an offence could be committed, even though the seller did not know the contents of the document sold. A fine of £lO was imposed. On the application of Mr. J. J. Sullivan, £4 4s was fixed as security for appeal.
