TWO OFFERS FOR “MAUI”
OLD HARBOUR DREDGE (Special to THE SUN.) GISBORNE, Thursday. The Harbour Board has decided, on the recommendation of Mr. F. W. Furkert, engineer-in-chief of the Public Works Department, to proceed with the dredging of the inner basin with a view to providing a good coastal harbour. It is postponing the prosecution of the outer work. In the meantime, the board is considering a hire offer for the dredge Maui, which has been moored in Auckland Harbour for some years. The Marine Department proposes to use the Maui for development of Westport Harbour, and offers £SO a week with the remission of two months in twelve for lost time. The Gisborne board accepted the general terms, but was willing to offer only one month’s remission. The Maui is fitted for either bucket or suction dredging in deep water. As well as dredging out the Kaiti basin, the Gisborne Harbour Board intends to extend the breakwater, excavate the swinging basin at the foot of the existing groyne, and carry out other minor works. It is not intended to go on with the Whareongaonga project, although the stone will be secured by contract if possible in order to make a trial of its quality. All other sections of the original scheme have been postponed for consideration at a later date.
