MANAGER’S DEFAULT BIG FORGERY CHARGE GUILT ADMITTED Admitting His guilt, Thomas Hughes, aged 29, appeared at the Police Court yesterday afternoon and was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence on charges of forging and uttering a cheque for £301) 15s, and stealing sums of money totalling £3B 2s 8d from the Law Book Company of New Zealand. Accused was extradited from Sydney Crawford Young, public accountant, who was in charge of the audit of the Law Book Company, said that accused ha’d been manager of the company for nine months. On May 14, Hughes went to Sydney without telling witness, and inquiries disclosed that accused had drawn a cheque for £3OO 15s in favour of Thomas Cook and Sons. Further examination showed that accused had failed to pay in a cheque for £35 6s Scl, and there was a shortage of £2 16s in petty cash. Other evidence showed that accused had been given a traveller’s cheque by Thomas Cook and Sons in exchange for a cheque for £ 300 1 ss.
