R. A. ROSE’S VIRTUAL RETIREMENT FROM THE CHAMPIONSHIP ARENA

(Special to TUB SUN.) MASTERTON, To-day. R. A. Rose, champion long distance runner, will not compete in the New Zealand cross-country championship this year, nor does he intend making an attempt to regain the Australasian title, which he won two years ago, and had to let go by default last year owing to his absence in England. His principal reason for not participating in these two events is that his farm requires as much attention as he can give it, while a cold contracted at the Wellington provincial championships last Saturday definitely precluded his appearance in the New Zealand championship at Christchurch. Rose also states that it is very unlikely that he will be available for selection for the New Zealand team for the next Olympiad. His main reason is a purely personal matter, but he added by way of comment that the rules of amateurism were so stringent that out-of-pocket expenses imposed by two world trips within two years were far too great for a small farmer.
