BEAUTIFUL LINEN
There was a day when beautiful linen was a housewife’s pride. She still appreciates it, but hardly with the same quality of appreciation as her grandmother. Checked luncheon mats have stifled all enthusiasm. But all pendulums have a return swing and table cloths are in fashion again, and there are many new and beautiful designs in damask from which to choose. The Elgin Marbles are the inspiration for the border of a new production, and the frieze which they make shows to advantage against a perfectly plain centre. Those who will not have even double damask colourless are offered a choice of exquisite cloths in which the design is picked out in delicate handtinted tones. Though so fragile in appearance, the colours are quite fast to light and laundering. The table napkins are tinted to match. Japan vies with Ireland in these novelties and from the Far Bast comes damask cloths in various pale tints with their border designs in linen of silvery white sheen. These designs are purely Oriental in conception and the pagodas, temples and the familiar Gates of Happiness offer a pleasing contrast to our more conventional scrolls and flowers.
