TECHNICAL SCHOOLS IN RURAL AREAS
REDUCTION IN NUMBER NEED FOR ENCOURAGEMENT (THE SUN’S Parliamentary Reporter.') WELLINGTON, Thursday. The diminution of technical schools in country districts was referred to in the House to-day by Mr. J. Bitchener. Waitaki, who asked the Minister of Education if he were prepared to give further assistance to these institutions. These schools were fast diminishing, said Mr. Bitchener, and if not accorded assistance in the way of wool-classing and other subjects in agricultural districts, they would have to go out. Such classes would greatly assisit the farmers. Mr. Bitchener also reminded the Minister of his promise in connection with the establishment of a high school at Waimate. The Hon. R. A. Wright said the diminution of the country technical schools was caused by the additional inducement for country pupils to attend schools in the centres. He had not forgotten his promise respecting Waimate and while he did not make any specific promise he felt the scheme would have to go ahead sooner or later. When this was done a room might be attached for wool-classing.
