Walnuts and Wine Inspire Preference

EMPIRE TRADE FAVOURED By Cable. —Press Association.—Copyright Reed. 10.5 a.m. LONDON, Thursday. Mr. L. S. Amery, Secretary ol State for the Dominions, in a speech at a luncheon given by the Empire Marketing Board to Press representatives of the Dominions, revealed that the board originated from a suggestion which Mr. Alfred Deakin, then ’ the Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of Australia, made at the Imperial Conference of 190 S, but he recalled that the suggestion did not apply until the Conservatives were desirous of increasing preferences. This they were unable to do, owing to their election pledge pot to introduce tariff reform. Therefore they decided to spend £1,000,000 a year in assisting Empire development. Sir Stanley Reid, of India, formerly editor ,p£ the “Times of India,” urged that the board’s work should be extended throughout the Empire. Mr. A. J. Fraser (Australian Press Association), supporting Sir Stanley Reid, said that the board should educate Dominion purchasers as to what Empire goods were available before purchasing foreign goods. He expressed the hope that Mr. Amery, during his visit to the Dominions, would develop that suggestion. Mr. Amery, in reply, approved the idea of the Dominions having organisations ■working on parallel lines, and urged the newspapers to use their influence to that end. —A. and N.Z.Sun.
