PETROL STORAGE

NEW SCALE OF CHARGES NEWMARKET COUNCIL MEETS I don’t- think we can go wrong in approving of them. The fees represent a considerable increase on the present ones.” So, moved by the Mayor, Mr. S. Donaldson, the Newmarket Borough Council last night approved a new scale of fees for licences to store bulk petrol, which was submitted by the deputy-Chief Inspector of Explosives. The old scale, said the letter, had been drawn up when petrol was stored almost exclusively in cases. Now the practice -of bulk storage in underground tanks had altered the complexion of the scale. OTHER MATTERS DISCUSSED Permission was granted for Newmarket Church to use a portion of the reserve on Sunday evenings for openair services. The Chief Postmaster wrote informing the council that in response to its representations another post box had been erected in Broadway. The council’s solicitors forwarded a draft of a bill to be submitted to Parliament to vest the site of the municipal buildings in the council, and to validate acts done in respect to the building. The Waterworks Committee reported that 50 plugs and 100 boxes had been delivered, and recommended that the council authorise the replacement of the present hydrants with three-inch hydrants. The Streets Committee recommended that the council have plans prepared for shelter sheds on Outhwaite Park, with a view to calling tenders. The committee also submited an estimate of £3,492 19s 6d for expenditure on streets up to the end of March, 1928.
