“THE MERCHANT OF VENICE”

LECTURE TO W.E.A. CLASS A critical examination of Shakespeare’s “Merchant of Venice” was undertaken by the Rev. W. .Tellie in a lecture to a Workers’ Educational Asso ciation class in the old Grammar School last evening. The lecturer referred to the influence upon English drama in Shakespeare’s time of Italian tales and legends, one of which corresponded in almost every detail to “The Merchant of Venice.” Shakespeare’s central idea, according to the lecturer, was to illustrate the fact that love is stronger than hate, and the final scene might be described as a prophecy of the happiness awaiting the human race when the power of love is recognised by all.
