YACHTSMEN’S REVEL
VICTORIA CRUISING CLUB ANNUAL PRIZE-GIVING To cap the yaching season the many crews of the Victoria Cruising Club hove-to at the Scots Hall last night. Fair admirers, hundreds of them, were there, of course, and the prize-giving was sandwiched in a merry dance. “I suppose I am the oldest yachting man here,” said the patron of the club, Mr. Ernest Davis, “and this giving out of so many valuable prizes makes me vastly envious, because I must confess that in my 42 years of yachting I have never won a prize.” This was the 23rd year he had given the prizes as patron. The fact that £llO in money and about £4OO worth of trophies were to be awarded spoke well of the prosperity of the club. The Victoria and other yachting clubs would show up the foolishness of the statement that the day of the sailing boat was done, and he wished every success to the sport. In Auckland they had a harbour unrivalled in the world for cruising. Mr. Davis then presented the prizes, a complete list of which was published in THE SUN yesterday. The winners of the principal trophies were: Casey Cup, Venus; Rae Cup* Surprise; Boonstra Cup, Ngaio; launches, Manurere; aggregate prizes—launches, Pal o’ Mine;; 20ft and over, Winifred; under 20ft, Alert; Speight Cup (first over the line), Spray. The president of the club, Mr. W. Casey, and an energetic committee had made perfect arrangements for the dance, which was one of the most successful held by Auckland yachtsmen.
