PIONEER AUCKLAND SETTLER
THE LATE MRS. J. SINTON Mrs. Janet Sinton, of Brigham’s Creek, who died on Saturday at the age of 89 years, was born at Stow, Midlothian. She came to Auckland with her late husband, Mr. William Sinton in the sailing ship, Red Jacket, in 1860. For a few months Mr. and Mrs. Sinton lived at Burt’s Farm, Paerata, but left it in time to escape a raid by hostile natives, in which the son o? the ploughman at the farm was killed. After a brief stay at Riverhead Mr. and Mrs. Sinton returned to Paerata, but 12 months later moved to Western Springs. About 1864 they took up a small section at Hobsonville, where they -were the third family to settle. In 1880 Mr. Sinton died, leaving his wife with a young family, with whom she stayed at the farm until 1890, when, with two of her sons, she purchased a store and farm at Brigham’s Creek and founded the business known as Sinton Brothers. Mrs. Sinton is survived by three sons and two daughters, Mr. J. W. Sinton, of Hobsonville, Mr. A. R. Sinton and Mr. John Sinton, of Brigham’s Creek, and Mrs. N. A. Johnston, of Katikati, and Mrs. W. Ockleston. of Hobsonville. There are 38 grandchildren and 53 great-grandchildren.
