EDUCATION DEPARTMENT CENSURED BY S.M.
“DEAD-END JOBS” YOUTH AND PROBATION (Special to THE SUN.) CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday. “The present probation system is only filling in what should have been done by the education authorities in their omission to train youth on a really vocational system.” This censure o£ the Education Department and its methods was delivered by Mr. E. D. Mosley, S.M., today. “Training for life work should ljo one o£ the most important features of education,” he continued. “Such a large percentage o£ our youth to-day is not trained for any particular employment. After leaving school they drift into whatever is handy, and it they prove failures at that they drift into unemployment. Some of them become of the vagrant type, and all face a great danger of becoming criminals.” The magistrate went on to say that the authorities must be very careful not to lose their grip too much on the administration of criminal law, or else the probation system would fail, and fail very badly. “The number of young people on probation is so great now that the expert probation officers who are appointed cannot keep in touch with all that are in their charge,” concluded Mr. Mosley.
