SUFFOCATED APPLES

In the course of a short debate in the House of Lords on the work of the Industrial and Scientific Research Committee. the Earl of Balfour instanced what had been done with regard to apples. Formerly they had to consider the problem of the perishing of apples on their way from Australia. In one year the loss amounted to £250,000, and the problem was laid before the Food Commission, who found that when they were dealing with picked apples in transit they were not dealing with the dead but the living. These apples were living and breathing exactly like their lordships, and it was found that they were dying of suffocation. It was the old problem of the Black Hole of Calcutta. That discovery was not only very interesting in itself, but it saved £250,000 a year to the apple growers as the result of scientific research. He asked their lordships to realise the enormous value of the work given by these great men of science.
