MEMS. FOR WOMEN MOTORISTS

EMERGENCY HINTS To the woman driver there can be few more irritating experiences than the failure of her car to start after a downpour of rain. All sorts of components are held suspect, but the cause of the trouble is usually a simple one. Water leaking through the top hinge of the bonnet on to the plugs or magneto, or both, is the most frequent cause. The same trouble is often experienced after the car has been hosed down during cleaning A simple way to obviate exhausted batteries, and exhausted tempers, through having to crank the engine repeatedly in the rain, is to carry a piece of waterproof sheeting, which can be slipped under the bonnet and over the engine and magneto if the car is to be left in the rain or is about to be cleaned. Care must be taken to remove it before starting up the engine, or it may catch in the fan. Failure to start easily after the car has been left in the open is often due , to the fact that the points of the plug are too far apart, and a “fat” enough spark is not obtained. It requires little technical knowledge to detach the plug connections, unscrew the plug with the box spanner provided, and tap the little wires at the base of the plug somewhat closer together if they show evidence of having burned away j slightly. Medicine-stains on silver spoons can : be removed by rubbing the spoons with a rag dipped in dilute sulphuric acid j and washing off with soap-suds.
