ONE FINE DAY
Incidents at Victorian Fixture Chapter of Disasters As if nine races were not sufficient, the recent Epsom (Melbourne) meeting had more than its share of incident Three jockeys were taken to hospital, all more or less seriously injured. A protest, a notable exhibition of rearing and kicking at the post and also a horse who broke a leg in a race without being touched, were some of the mishaps. Also an odds-on fancy crashed, and in seven of the nine races the favourite was beaten. There was a shortage of stalls and some of the horses had to be tied to a fence. STUCK FOR A FURLONG 1 Nearing the home turn in the I jumpers* flat race L. G. Fox, well- | known Melbourne jockey, was crowded on to the rails with such force that he j sustained a compound fracture of the I leg. For over a furlong Fox stuck to his mount. j A hundred yards from home he pulled the horse up and tried to dismount, but immediately collapsed, while the riderless horse galloped off As Fox fell the stipendiary stewards and a section of the crowd rushed to his aid. He was treated in the casualty room and later admitted to hospital. CENSURED AND FELL J. Nichols also had an unlucky day. He was severely censured after th€* second race for allowing his mount to interfere with another horse. In the sixth race, acting as a substitute jockey, he was taking Lady Craig to the post when she bolted. He was thrown and received slight concussion. He, too, is in hospital. Another hospital case is C. Emerson, who received concussion when Gold Pin, whom he was riding in the Trial Handicap, fell when half a mile from home.
