MILKMEN’S HOURS

EARLIER START OPPOSED LEGISLATION NECESSARY By a gentleman’s agreemnt with the milk-vending firms, the milkman rises at an unearthly hour and begins his rounds at 3 a.m., an hour earlier than is incorporated in the award. Some employers wish to provide for an earlier starting hour, which the union objects to. At a conference held on Thursday opposition was strong. However, it was decided to ask for a conference with the employers. Roundsmen believe that their agreement gives the employers fairly generous consideration, for in consideration that they work seven hours more a week they receive only 5s more a week and an extra week’s holiday for doing so. The example of the Wellington roundsmen has been cited. They start work by agreement at 2 a.m. But they work a six-day week of 46 hours and get an average wage of £ 5 for doing An earlier starting hour would need an amendment to the Shops and Offices Act.
