The final figures of last year’s operations of the Forestry Department of the Rotorua area were given by Mr. W. T. Morrison, conservator of forests, this morning. These show that last year in the Kaingaroa Reserve 15,137 acres were planted with 7,647,000 trees. It is expected that 18,000 acres will be planted this season and bring the total area under Government afforestation in this district to 90,000 acres. Last year 5,000,000 trees were sold to farmers, local bodies and private afforestation companies. A staff of 200 is permanently—engaged, and it is expected shortly to start an unemployed relief camp for 50 more.
