ALDERMEN SAY-

City Council Asides The Mayor (during last evening's discussion on footpaths. You’ve already spoken, Cr. Murray. Cr. Murray: Not to the amendment, sir.—Oh, I’m sorry. (Laughter.) "There was a whole heap of these paper things hung round the walls.” —Cr. Entrican, describing the decorations at a cabaret. "In American cities the authorities have to get permission to open up the footpaths, and they cannot do so again for twelve months.”—Thus a councillor contrasted U.S.A. with Auckland. Cr. S. I. Crookes read the suggestion that the establishment and suitable housing of a collection, for the Zoo, of all the native birds of the Dominion, be considered. “It is our plain duty to grant licences without the confirmation of the lire brigade superintendent.”—Cr. A. J. Entrican, when the granting of a licence to a cabaret in Hellaby’s Buildings, Karangahape Road, was under discussion. “I would prefer to see them given a street collection day, said Cr. A. J. Stallworthy, when the council agreed to grant ten guineas to the Play Association. A street collection date for the St. John Ambulance funds was approved. “A fortnight ago the Tramways Department paid the City Council £ 4,000 in heavy traffic fees for buses. The council is giving private bus proprietors, its competitors, time to pay. I think the same consideration should be extended to the Tramway Department.”—Cr. J. A. G. Allum, chairman of the Tramways Committee. Those present at the meeting, which lasted one hour forty minutes, were: The Mayor (Mr. G. Baildon), Crs. Ellen Melville, Alice Basten, A. J. Entrican, G. Knight, G. Ashley, L. A. Eadie, A. J. Stallworthy, F. W. H. Brinsden, O. Mcßrine, J. Dempsey, J. A. C. Allum, S. I. Crookes, M. J. Bennett, J. B. Paterson, Casey, E. J. Phelan, M. J. Coyle, J. Donald, W. PI. Murray.
