MY LADY’S HOSE
QUEEN STREET SPLASHES WOE TO SILK STOCKINGS CR. MELVILLE COMPLAINS IN the name of the silk-stockinged Cr. Ellen Melville last night invoked the City Council’s support toward having Queen Street foot-' paths improved. "THE report tells us nothing new, and is not a satisfactory answer to my question,” commented Cr. Melville, when the engineer, Mr. W. E. Bush, reported, in reply to earlier representations, that, generally speaking, th© condition of the footpaths had been tremendously improved, and that but for the large amount of disturbance, owing to the laying of mains, and the active building development, the paths of the city would have been in excellent condition. “Possibly if the city engipeer wore ladies’ stockings,” said Cr. Melville, "he would not be satisfied with conditions on a wet day. DISCREDITABLE TO CITY “I would like the committee to consider a policy of putting Queen Street footpaths in order, or else the inclusion of provision for improvement in the loan, as the state of Queen Street is discreditable to the city.” Cr. L. A. Eadio said four separate bodies—the City Council, the Gas Company, the Drainage Board and the Power Board—all had authority to rip up footpaths. It showed the need for co-operation among local bodies. Mr. W. IT. Murray complained of the state of suburban footpaths, particularly in Shelly Beach Road. Cr. J. A. C. Allum said they would have to consider the re-paving of the footpaths, but the task would call for capital expenditure. He moved, and Cr. Crookes seconded. that provision for the work should be made in the loan proposals. Cr. Melville: My complaint is chiefly in regard to Queen Street. Anyone who is satisfied with the Queen Street footpaths is easily satisfied. The Mayor, Mr. G. Baildon, explained that the concreting of the roads had compelled them to put all underground mains under the footpaths. The amendment was rejected.
