WHANGAREI WAIATA SOCIETY
A crowded house greeted the Waiata Society’s staging of the musical phantasy. "Luv," at the Whangarei Town Hall on Wednesday evening. The show, which was arranged and produced by Mr. Theo. Trezise, will run a season of four nights and a matinee. It is an entertainment running the whole ground from burlesque to grand opera. "Luv” is beautifully dressed and staged, and the artists one and all manifested the possession of histronic ability of no mea standard. The society is very happy in the possession of a number of fine voices. Miss Mary McLeod essayed several numbers, and this young lady is an invaluable member of the company. Miss Beryl Blanchard made an oppealing Cho-Cho-San, and sang "One Bine Bay” with fine appreciation, though due significance of a chorus was hard to determine. Miss Nell Dobson, too, has a pleasing voice, and dainty Miss Madge Burnett could have been found another song in addition to "Safety First.” Mr. R. U. Hosking made an imposing Wolfram, and his great Tannhauser number, "O Star of Eve,” left one of the best impressions of the evening. On the comedy side the producer had plenty of good material to hand in, Mr. A. Morgan. Misses BroughtonCarr and the producer himself. Local hits, of course, were much appreciated, and Mr. D. Laurenson showed some amusing "Things That Never Happen,” in association with Misses N. Benjamin. G. Matheson, Messrs. Sid Blanchard and A. W. Findlay.
