UNCLE SAM'S STARS OF ATHLETIC FIELD
INTERCOLLEGIATE SPORTS FOUR RECORDS BROKEN The great strength of inter-collegiate athletics in America is shown by a remarkable series of performances registered at Philadelphia on May 28 at the annual 4:rack and field meet of the American university colleges. One world’s record and three inter-collegiate marks were shattered during the afternoon. Carr’s 14ft for the pole vault beat Hoff’s old record by 3-16th of an inch; and new figures for the meet were set by Charley Borah, South Californian sprinter, who returned 20 9-10 for the furlong; by Aldred Bates, of Pennsylvania, who cleared 24ft 3£in in the long jump; and by Creth Hinos, of Georgetown, who hurled the javelin 205 ft 7 5-Bin. How is this for all-round merit? The first five men in the long jump all cleared 24ft or over; the first five men in the high jump 6ft 2£in or over; the first five men in the shot put 45ft B|in or over.
