TE AWAMUTU CHAMBER
Mr. R. A. Coyne presided at the ! monthly meeting of the Te Awamutu Chamber of Commerce. Members present were: Messrs. D. T. B. McArthur. A. G. Warburton, O. O’Brien. C. F. Battson, D. Bockett, H. C. Rainey , and R. Laurie. Co-operation was sought by the settlers in the Pirongia-Kawhia Road, ; who are desirous of having the six miles of road still unmetalled between these two centres done this coming summer. The chamber endorsed the settlers’ efforts to have the road metalled, but suggested that before approaching the Minister they ask the local body to obtain an estimate of the cost of metalling the six miles, and find out if the former vote was £ for £ on £1,500. Captain Dittmer and SergeantMajor W. H. Cully attended by invitation to discuss the matter of military instruction of territorials and senior cadets. Captain Dittmer said it had been decided to dispense with the half-holi-day parades in favour of a week’s drill and instruction. Those who did not attend the week’s parade would be required to attend afternoon parades. If cadets did the six days’ continuous drill they were exempt for the rest of the year. This year the week’s parades for Te Awamutu territorials and cadets would probably be from August 1 to 13—territorials for the first six days and cadets for the second six days. If emergency arose an employer could get his employees oft parade by applying to the sergeantmajor, but he appealed to employers not to apply unless it was absolutely necessary.
