GOOD LAMB YARDING MEETS LOWER VALUES
PRICES AT WESTFIELD SHEEP MARKET FIRM One of the best yardings of lambs seen at Westfield for some months came forward yesterday to meet with competition from only about halt-a-dozen buyers. The big butchers, dealers and exporters were operating, while the bulk of the smaller men were absent at the trots. The yarding of over 1.200 lambs comprised some of the primest ottered for some time, and the percentage ot firsts was considerably larger than has been the case for the last two or three months. With the absence of the butchers, however, the market was irregular, and generally registered from Is to 2s lower than late sales. For the lighter store sorts prices were even lower with a, very slow demand. Best value on the day was received from a pen of seconds submitted on account of A. J. Melville, Buckland. These lambs went to an exporter for 20s 3d and, compared with exceptionally heavy, strong-woolled prime lambs, which made from 24s 6d to 25s 6d, were well quitted. Good healthy store lambs made from 12s 6d. A yarding of under 1,000 sheep m the fat pens, representative of an average Quality well below that of last week, met with a most irregular demand, due no doubt to the paucity of buyers, and a feeling at the start that a small yarding would see the usual hardening of values. At the start of the sale the market was firm, registering an advance of over 2s on last week’s parity. Especially was this the case in regard to ewes. As the sale progressed, however, the demand eased, and the close saw an average rise in the day s market from Is to Is 6d. An exceptionally fine pen of half-a-dozen ewes sold on account of Mr. Kumdli made 25s sd. A truck of Karaka wethers, on account of C. C. Ottway, prime but not exceptional, made to 31s. In the store pens a small pen of scraggy ewes made 10s. A lew odd lots of rams were offered on a weak market and drew little more than 10s. A pen of prime wethers offered on account of A. L. Hull. Waiuku, made to 31s 3d. A line of J. Tolhoplvs, Ahuroa, wethers made 30s 3d. In the cattle pens a large yarding of both steers and cows sold on a weaker market. There was a general easing of values, and the sale tended to drag toward the end. Generally the quality of the yarding was good, prime cattle being offered freely in both the steer and cow sections.
Top price for the day was secured for a line of 16 prime steers offered on account of C. G. Robertson, Otauo, which sold to £ll 15s. Another good find sold on account of R. Clark, Waiau Pa. sold to £lO 17s 6d. In the calf pens prices registered a slight decline on late rates. A small attendance of buyers, irrespective of the fact that the yarding was lower than that offered at late sales, saw an easing in values.
