FISHERMAN FINED
USE OF SEINE NET HEAVY PENALTY INFLICTED (From Our Own Correspondent.) THAMES, Tuesday. A case of interest to fishermen was heard this morning when Arthur Ludwig, an Auckland fisherman, was prosecuted for using a purse Seine net in prohibited waters. This happened on Anzac Day, when the launch owned by Mr. Kerby, of Thames, found Ludwig fishing with a Seine net off Whakatiwai, eight miles within the prohibited area. Kerby remonstrated with Ludwig, who asked him not to report. Next day the inspector was informed and he measured the distance. Evidence was given by William Kerby and Cyril Burgess supporting the charge. The defence admitted the use of the net, but for bait only. , One witness thought they could use a Seine net as a net for bait. The magistrate said the regulations stated that a purse Seine net of any description could not be used within the prohibited limits. Ludwig had been convicted before for using a Seine net in prohibited waters and he would be fined £lO and costs and the boat and gear were forfeited.
