RAILWAY DEPARTMENT SCHEME HOUSES FOR WORKMEN Press Association. WELLINGTON, Tuesday. Negotiations have been finalised by the Railway Department for the purchase of about 20 acres of land seven minutes from the Ngaio Railway Station, for the purpose of establishing a settlement for railway workers. An immediate start is to be made. Its development on town-planning lines will provide about a hundred sections each approximately a sixth of an acre. About eighty houses are to be built by the department for letting to railway employees on the basis of. one day’s pay weekly as rent. It is understood that the purchase price of the property was about £IO,OOO.
