FARMERS IN POLITICS

THE NEW COUNTRY PARTY PLATFORM NOT FINALISED The group settlement land policy, a gradual reduction of the protective tariff, and the establishment of agricultural banks. These will be the main planks in the platform of the recentlyconstituted Country Party. Though the May conference of Auckland delegates of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union decided at Whangarei on the constitution of a Country Party to contest certain seats at the next Parliamentary elections, as yet the platform has not been finalised. Several meetings of the executive have been held, where various problems have been discussed, and it is now hoped that the platform will be finalised and ready to present to the public following a meeting to be held on Wednesday next. It is reported that three, of the main planks will be on the lines enumerated above. Until the final meeting, however, they are subj'ect to revision.
