NEW ZEALAND HONEY’S HIGH PLACE
POSITION IN LONDON HEADS THE MARKETS CANADA, California, Hawaii Siberia, Jamaica, and Australia, all send honey on to the London market, but,- competing with New Zealand, these countries, take a very low place. New Zealand honey brings from 55s to 85s; a cwt, according to grade, while Canadian white clover honey, making up to 50s, commands the next highest value. Honey is produced in all parts of this Dominion, and in the 1923 census 6,289 hives were registered. Of this number, 1,328 were in the Auckland Province, 942 in Canterbury, and 973 in Otago.
Last year Auckland was responsible for almost half of the total amount of honey which left these shores for the Old Country. Balancing this to a certain extent, however, is the fact that statistics show that considerably more honey per head of population is consumed in the South Island than in the North. Credit for the fact that the New Zealand product commands such favourable attention on the London market is largely given to the New Zealand Control Board. This board, by paying attention to grading, advertising, and marketing, leaves no stone unturned to keep the Dominion’s product high in popular favour, and present values are a striking testimony to its success in this direction.
