KOWERDA’S PATRIOT CRY A BROKEN-HEARTED BOY PRESSED INTO SOVIET ARMY By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright WARSAW, Thursday.“Russia, poo.' Russia!" was Boris Kowerda’s only remark when he shot Peter Voikoff, the Soviet Minister to Poland, according to the evidence of M. Rosengoltz, late Soviet Charge d’Affairs to England. Kowerda’s father gave evidence that his son was forcibly drafted into the Soviet army fighting against Poland. His son had a quiet disposition, but he was unnerved by hts sufferings during the Red terror from 1917 to 1920. Kowerda, in a statement, said he suffered dreadfully in boyhood and he hoped that Russia would again be happy. He was sorry for his action as it had worried Poland. Kowerda was sentenced to penal servitude for life, with a recommendation that it be communted to 15 years.—A. and N.Z.
DEATH FOR OFFICER ESPIONAGE CHARGE GAOL FOR HIS WIFE By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright MOSCOW, Wednesday. A naval and military tribunal, sentenced Kiopikoff, former commander of a ship in the Baltic fleet, to death on a charge of espionage for England.
His wife was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment.—A. and N.Z.
