“Jazz Music Immoral”
ATTACK BY PADEREWSKI (Special to THE SUE.) CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday. “ TAZZ will do no good to the world'* music, nor will it lead non-musical people to better things. It is a perversion of rhythm and taste. You cannot teach morals by teaching immorality.” So declared Paderewski in an exclusive interview granted to THE SUN. “During the 23 years since my last visit, the standard of the world's music has risen considerably. It has meant tremendously hard work for me to keep abreast of so marked an advance,” he added. Much of Paderewski's later life has been spent in America. In the schools of the United States, there was much attention paid to music, and provided the instruction was well directed, he agreed that this would have a wonderful influence on American musical taste. In most of the secondary and in some of the primary schools, they even have skilled orchestras. The talented visitor claims that, so far as he has been able to see yet, the New Zealand appreciation of music has increased since his last visit.
