TECHNICAL COLLEGE

REDUCTION OF QUORUM TRAINING OF GIRLS A full attendance of members of the Board of Managers of the Seddon Memorial Technical College met yesterday, the chairman, Mr. H. S. W. King, presiding. Letters were received from Mrs. Boocock and Miss Jefferson refusing the positions of instructress in needlework and dressmaking on account of the low salary offered by the department. Authority was given to Mr. A. J. Park, principal of the college, to make temporary appointments of instructresses in dressmaking. In the meantime the board decided to advertise again and write to the applicants for the vacant position asking what salary they would be prepared to accept if appointed. In accordance with notice of motion by the chairman, it was decided to reduce the quorum from seven “to comply with the* provisions of the Education Act, 1914,” which allows three. Mr. C. A. Watts dissented on the grounds that the board would be ruled by a minority. He believed, further, than there would be no inducement to members to be present, as the business r, f the board could be transacted by so few. Iri a letter to the board the principal outlined a proposal to set up an advisory committee for the domestic science course. Mr. Park said many technical colleges had found such committees of great value, and he felt that representatives of women’s industries should have a share in arranging the training given in the college for girls preparing to enter those industries. Mr. Park’s proposals provided that members would be constituted as follows:—(1) A woman board member representing parents and pupils to be chairman; (2) a member appointed by the National Council of Women; (3) two members selected by the Retail Drapers* Association, one each for millinery and dressmak.ng; (4) one member to be co-opted by the committee. Discussion v/as deferred to the next meeting of the board.
