GET MORE KICKS THAN HA’PENCE
PATRIOTIC WORKERS’ REWARD CHAIRMAN’S STATEMENT “TT has been reported that mem - bers of the executive of the Patriotic Association receive a reward for their services. They do—a reward which comes in the goodwill and app-eciation of subscribers. the pubic, and the beneficiaries!” Mr. V. J. Lamer, who presided over the annual meeting of the Patriotic Association, made this statement yesterday. “But so /ar as a financial reward is concerned, not one member of the executive has ever received a penny for his services.” he continued. lie thanked God that the patriotic societies, from one end of New Zealand to the other, were immune from the money itch.
He said that dissatisfaction felt by a very few applicants for assistance was due to the fact that some of the claimants did not understand the nature of the fund. The Auckland fund had nothing whatever to do with the Canteen Fund or the National War Fund. It had been subscribed for a definite purpose. Each case was investigated in a spirit of sympathy, and if mistakes were made they were on the side of generosity. The association's object was to do the best possible for all who had claims on the funds, and it unaltered by “vapourish outpourings.” The Hon. G. J Garland, M L.C . said the report disclosed the splendid work of the chairman and executive. They had carried out their duties in a careful and methodical way. There had been a very good reason why more money than usual had been paid away this year. Mr. Neville Newcomb congratulated the executive, saying philosophically that everyone in a high position got “more kicks than ha’pence.” A motion of congratulation to the chairman, executive, and staff was passed.
