A MAORI MOTORIST BEFORE COURT
WANTS TIME TO PAY HIS FINES CAR WORTH £9 (From Our Own Correspondent.) OPOTIKI, Thursday. In the Police -Court this morning before Mr. W. Kenriek, S.M., a native named Hapi Hakamog,, pleaded guilty to the following charges: Driving a motor-car without being the holder of a licence, using the car without the required number-plates attached and being in charge of the car while drunk. Constable Hedslip, who prosecuted, stated that he arrested acc.used while sitting in the car in the main street. Another Maori who was sober was endeavouring to crank the car while accused worked the levers. Hakamon had bought the car in Auckland and had driven to Opotiki. The magistrate severely commented on the case, but would take into consideration the fact that he was not driving the car when arrested. Fines totalling £l3 11s were imposed. The . court was convulsed with laughter when accused said he couldn’t pay the fine and wanted a month to pay. The magistrate asked for the whereabouts of the car. The constable said it was in a garage. The owner had bought the car for only £D. Accused was ordered to pay the fines before leaving town.
