THAT BROKEN AGREEMENT
N.Z. RUGBY LEAGUE TO SUPPORT N.S.W. IN UNITED ACTION At a meeting of the New Zealand Council, held last evening, a cablegram was received from the New South Wales Union, which read as follows: “Are you agreeable we request England make decision lifting two years’ residential qualifications non-operative until New Zealand, Queensland, Wales, have conference with English managers next season?” In reply to this cable, the New Zealand League stated that they were willing to support the New South Wales League in any action that they may find it necessary to take to defeat the English clubs in their attempt to seduce the best of our players with large offers of money. “The restrictions in force until recently have acted as a deterrent to the ambitions of the English clubs in that direction, and have proved satisfactory to us, and we are willing to take any reasonable action that will tend to retain the protection to which we are entitled,” continued the letter. Mr. Stallworthy said that the New Zealand League would have to stick to its guns, for even when the two players did arrive at Homo they could not play for another club without a transfer. "“It is sucking the yery lifeblood of the game in the young countries,” he said. “If necessary, we should pass a further resolution refusing to grant the transfers.” Mr. McLean: We have been treated as though we are nobody. We should show our teeth. If necessary, we should “cut the painter.” This is the most retrograde step that has been made since the establishment of the code in 1909. I would nut wish to have anything to do with the game if England is going to dominate and rule over us. It was decided to send a cablegram supporting the proposal of the New South Wales League, and also to send a ‘ message direct to England stating the council’s views.
